Things to Do in Townsend

About Townsend (Tips for Planning Your Stay at Country Manor Acres) The first questions tourists usually ask is how long should I plan to be there? Here is what you should know about Townsend to make informed decisions about your family vacation at Country Manor Acres. The incorporated population is only about 400, although there are several thousand in the greater Townsend area.  There are no big businesses or manufacturing plants, but Townsend is filled with the needs of tourists, including: About 12 restaurants                                                              Our Own Visitor Center Two grocery stores                                                                 Gas Stations and Banks Two museums –                                                                         Craft Stores and Artisans one train museum and one historic museum           Zip line and mountain climbing Tuckaleechee Caverns                                                           Several horse back riding stables (one of the best in the South)                                          Overnight stables and pastures for bringing Rental companies for bicycles and tube rentals               your own horse to the mountains Townsend is five miles long and the main highway, US 321 follows Little River all the way through town.  The river is very popular for fishing, swimming and tubing.  It is one of the cleanest rivers in the country because it comes directly from the National Park without going through any industrialized areas or farm land.  The tube rental companies also provide transportation to and from the drop off and pick up areas. One side of the highway includes a 5 mile long hiking and biking trail, well off the road for safety.  There are three tunnels that pass under the highway that lead to the river’s edge. There are also three swinging bridges in Townsend that pass over the river to the far side. Townsend City Limits touches the entrance to Great Smoky Mountain National Park right at the entrance that leads to historic and beautiful Cades Cover.  Cades Cove is an 11 mile circle that passes through historic churches, cemeteries, original log cabins, cantilever barns, as well plenty of open green pastures filled with grazing deer, and an occasional family of bears in the woods or trees.  There are plenty of places to get out of your car and take quiet and scenic trails or visit the historic landmarks. Townsend is also only 20 minutes from Pigeon Forge which is filled with music theaters, rides and amusements, including the world famous Dollywood Amusement Park.  If you enter Dollywood after 3:00 pm one day, you get the entire next day for free.  Gatlinburg is only 30 minutes away, and is a great attraction for shopping, sightseeing, a world glass Aquarium,  and a tram to take you to great views at the ski resort area.  Clingman’s Dome and Chimney Tops (the highest elevation within the park) are just a short drive away and pass by several waterfalls, river settings and picnic areas.  They are good, long hikes, along with Mount LeConte which requires advance reservations. Once in the National Park, Fontana Dam is just a few hours away, and some guests love to drive or ride motorcycles on The Dragon, a very curvy road through the park.  Cherokee and the Gambling Casino are on the North Carolina side of the park, just a half day’s drive. The scenic Foothills Parkway is already open to the South and will be opening soon to the route to Pigeon Forge. Just a short ways way is great rafting on the Ocoee River, and The Lost Sea is in Sweetwater, about 90 minutes away. Townsend is central to many other attractions in...

Outdoor Vintage Farm Weddings in the Foothills of the Smokies

Country Manor Acres in Townsend, TN, a small, genuinely peaceful little stretch of landscape right at the gates of the Smoky Mountain National Park, provides two highly Southern and exquisite items for newlyweds wanting to celebrate their big day in a very unique way – the Applachian Party Barn for the reception afterwards, and the Hayloft Sky Cabin for a honeymoon night or a place where family can stay. The Appalachian Party Barn is not simply a novelty, it is a full-service event accommodation for weddings, family reunions, baby showers, barbecues or any other get-together you could think of. Double doors on both ends of the barn and stall doors on the sides of the barn keep the barn bright and 3 paddle fans circulate the air. The center open area is large enough to accommodate a full band and dance area, and buffet. Most guests actually sit inside the stalls for dining! It’s definitely a great way to make the reception memorable and interesting and there’s even ample parking space for 100 guests. The Hayloft Sky Cabin is also a re-structured barn for overnight guests – up to 8 can sleep comfortably in the cabin, but you may also want it for just the two of you! The cabin features two king beds, two queen beds, a single bed, a queen sleeper/sofa, double-size futon sleeper, two and a half bathrooms, pool table, musical organ, flat screen TV and some of the best views of the Smokies in Townsend you can find!
